Not every black woman that wears weave is trying to fit a white standard. However many black women are.
When deciding how to photograph the women I had to
consider the setting. I wanted a backdrop that was simple
as not to take away from the subject matter (the hair) but at
the same time something that felt natural. I ruled the studio
as it didn’t feel natural and I didn’t like the formalness
of the studio environment. Because of the natural nature
of the project I decided that water would be an interesting
background for the photographs as there is a feeling of
purity which reflected the purity I wanted to show in the
images of the natural hair. Water unites us.
Water has been suggested to be symbolise passivity, adaptability,
purity, fertility, healing and cleansing. It is associated
with the emotional-intuitive or feminine aspects.
